Nederland is 17 miles west of, and 3000 feet above, the city of Boulder. It is the largest town along the Peak-to-Peak Scenic Byway that runs more than 55 miles from Black Hawk/Central City to Estes
Park. Along the way, motorists will pass ghost towns, Golden Gate Canyon State Park, the Indian Peaks Wilderness Area, Longs Peak (14,255'), and Rocky Mountain National Park. The road is well paved and open all year. It is one of the most scenic drives in the state. Nederland is served by regularly scheduled daily RTD bus service to and from Boulder. The history of our area was built upon mining, primarily gold, silver, and tungsten. Later the area became a destination for those seeking outdoor recreation, the quiet beauty of the mountains, and a slower way of community life.
A good first stop, and a source for maps and information on area recreational opportunities, is the Nederland Visitors Center located in the center of downtown Nederland. The Hardware Store behind the bank also has maps.
Nederland is a small town, but it has a few nice shops, some great restaurants, plus you can go fishing, hiking, or check out the mining museum. There is also a supermarket, a coop, a hardware store, and a used bookstore. There is a nice trail that starts at Chipeta Park (near the supermarket) and goes along the reservoir. You can either fish at the reservoir, along the stream, or if you are young enough at the kid’s fishing pond at Chipeta park. For more info on Nederland, see the Chamber of Commerce website: http://www.nederlandchamber.org/
Hiking. There are numerous hiking trails in the Nederland Area. But for starters try the Fourth of July or Hessie Trailheads just west of the town of Eldora that take you into the Indian Peaks Wilderness. Or you can drive up to the high country by taking the Moffat Tunnel Road west from Rollinsville. Make sure to get maps at the Visitor’s Center or Hardware Store in Nederland. Finally, Rocky Mountain National Park, is located about 60 minutes north of Nederland along the Peak to Peak Highway. The Nederland Chamber website (link above) has great descriptions of trails in the area. Also check out the U.S. Forest Service website for rules, regulations, current conditions, and trail info: http://www.fs.fed.us/r2/arnf/recreation/index.shtml
Fishing. We provide free fishing passes to the private Snowline Lake, located about one mile from the Chalet. If you wish to fish elsewhere, such as in the numerous creeks or high alpine lakes, you will need a state fishing license available at the hardware store in Nederland.
Mountain Biking. Mountain biking is very popular in the Nederland Area. Stop by the old train car (Happy Trails) near the B&F Supermarket to rent bikes and find out where to go.
Horseback Riding. If you like horseback riding, try the Sundance Stables, located across the street from the Sundance Lodge, 1 mile south of Nederland on Hwy 119. Phone for the stables –303-258-1176.
Skiing/Snowboarding. Eldora Ski Resort is only a 15-20 minute drive from the Mountain View Chalet. Western slope ski areas including Vail are a 1.5 to 2 hour drive away. Cross-county skiing and snow-shoeing abound in the national forest adjacent the Chalet.
Yoga. The Good Karma Center in Nederland has yoga classes you could take while you are here. 303-258-1121
In Boulder
Pearl Street Mall
One of the most popular places to go in Boulder is the Pearl Street Mall, which is a street closed off to traffic and is now only for pedestrians. There are multiple shops and restaurants (check out the Boulder Bookstore and the Boulder Artist’s coop for starters). Pearl Street is two blocks north of and parallel to Canyon Blvd. To get there from Nederland, drive down the Canyon, take a left (north) on ninth street, and then a right on Pearl Street. It will soon dead-end on the mall.
Boulder Dushanbe Teahouse. 1770 13th Street (between Canyon & Arapahoe).
303-442-4993A gift from Boulder’s sister city in Tajikistan, this teahouse contains hand-carved and hand-painted ceiling, tables, stools, columns, and exterior ceramic panels. A great place for lunch or just a sip of tea. Apparently it is the only authentic teahouse in the Western Hemisphere.
Boulder Farmer’s Market. Located on 13th Street between Canyon & Arapahoe (across from the Boulder Dushanbe Teahouse). Open during the growing season on Saturdays from 8am to 2pm and Wednesdays from 4pm to 8pm.
Hiking/Mountain Biking in Boulder. There are numerous trails in the foothills just west of Boulder. Chautauqua Park is located at the west end of Baseline (900 Baseline Road), where you can hike up to the Flatirons, the rock formations for which Boulder is famous. There is also a nice trail along Boulder Creek or you can hike at Settler’s Park, which is located on the north side of Canyon Blvd, just before you start going up the mountain. Central City Opera also owns and maintains 28 other historic buildings including 25 residences, built in Central City between 1860 and 1900.
